How To Get Health Insurance For Unemployed Family Member?

My father is 55, unemployed for 9+ months with no options from his previous employer. He has no debt and owns his own home free and clear. He has limited future employment options and lacks the cash to pay for his own health insurance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Find a broker and have him buy insurance. He wouldn't want to lose his home should something happen.

  3. You would have to call your insurance plan to see if you would be able to add your dad as a dependant. You might be able to, but you may not be able to either, but you should talk with your insurance plan.

  4. He's not going to get any.
The only free health insurance, or low income, is going to require he sells his assets to qualify (welfare health insurance).
If he's perfectly healthy, a good low/no deductible plan at his age would cost around $700 a month.
He's going to have to explore those limited future employment options - I'd strongly suggest checking out Walmart, as they offer health insurance to their part timers.

  5. Obtaining a personal health insurance policy may be difficult if your dad has any health issues. If he goes down that path, a high deductible plan will bring the monthly premium down considerably (much lower than $700 per month), but your father will need to have at least $5,000 (and likely more) per year saved up to pay for any expenses associated with the deductible.
I would concur with others that suggest your father go back to work. Wal-Mart is a great suggestion, they are very senior friendly and offer health benefits. It may be a step down from what he is used to, but if he sticks with them there may be a path up within the company for an exempt position.
